The Ideal School?
Our Los Angeles mom, Sandra Tsing Loh, broadens her school search by looking at a private school.
In this clip from her performance piece, Mother on Fire, Sandra visits the heavenly Wonder Canyon School. At first, Sandra is very impressed. Then comes the sticker shock.

I watched this comical clip from Sandra Tsing Loh with a predetermination that the California dreams for a perfect school would be poles apart from our East Coast prerequisites…However, Sandra’s witty monologue touched on so many familiar and parallel issues. Not long ago, while searching for a new middle school for my son, we recognized a familiar strong element of commodity in the Private School visitation, application and acceptance process. I truly wonder if children need glamorous buildings and alluring gardens. By placing emphasis on that ideal, picture perfect and unruffled learning environment, have we lost a glimpse of classical basic elements in educating young people? Will our children really grow into those benevolent, altruistic achievers…or will they seam together with the growing number of obstinate, self-seeking young twenty - somethings whose unrealistic expectations in the “real world” remain in a frothy state of skinny latte sipping limbo…I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
